Former Liberty Tech Coach Arnett Bodenhamer talks to his players during the Class AA semifinals in 2010.
He has been named coach at Columbia, replacing Cuyler Lanier. He was dismissed after going 28-57 the last three seasons.
“It’s something new, but change is good sometimes,” Bodenhamer said. “I’m not saying this to be arrogant or anything, but if you can coach you can coach. I think it’s going to be fun.”
He is the first African-American head coach in any sport at Columbia.
Bodenhamer, 38, was an assistant at Oakland last year and Independence the previous season.
He led Liberty Tech to a runner-up finish in Class AA as head coach in 2010. Bodenhamer coached Covington from 2005-08 and Maplewood from 2003-05.
He started his career as a Hunters Lane assistant for three seasons.
Bodenhamer played basketball at McGavock and baseball at Aquinas for two seasons. He played football his last two seasons at Tennessee State.
